When my daughter’s father went to Chile, he took it upon himself to explore the areas around Santiago during his time off on weekends. Late in his stay, he discovered Zapallar, having been invited by some of his more affluent Chilean friends for a weekend escape. This turned out to be an unexpected treasure of a town, so he decided to take my daughter, my family, and me there when we visited.
Zapallar is a town located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean 125 km miles northwest of Santiago.
We drove to Zapallar directly from Santiago, which was fine when on the highway. Once we entered the side roads, everyone got a bit car sick. It is such a winding road that we all had to roll the windows down and get some sea air until we arrived. We drove straight to a seaside restaurant, Chiringuito.
After two hours of driving, we were all hungry, so it was hard to wait another half hour before getting a table. However, the restaurant is very popular and worth the wait. The seafood is fresh and caught locally, and the vegetarian food option was so colourful and well presented that I had to take some pictures! The restaurant is perched alongside the rocky seashore.
Zapallar has a number of excellent seafood restaurants. Don’t miss the opportunity to try fresh ceviche, grilled fish, and the region’s specialty, Machas a la Parmesana (parmesan clams). The seaside atmosphere adds to the dining experience.
Zapallar is known for its breathtaking natural surroundings. With rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and crystal-clear waters, it’s an ideal spot for nature lovers and photographers. From the restaurant we took a leisurely stroll along the coastal paths and enjoyed panoramic ocean views.
We left our car in the restaurant parking lot and walked to the town’s main beach, Playa Zapallar.
This is the perfect place to unwind. It’s safe, serene, and surrounded by impressive coastal hills. While the waters are a bit chilly, the scenic beauty makes it worth the visit. If you prefer a quieter experience, nearby beaches like Playa de los Molles offer a more secluded atmosphere. I liked Playa Zapallar because it was surrounded by nice eateries and classy ladies—clearly a place where the rich go to relax.
Zapallar has retained its charm, with a mix of traditional wooden houses and elegant coastal villas. We explored the town’s quaint streets all afternoon, admiring the architectural blend of old and new.
The town also boasts a rich history as a favourite vacation spot for Chile’s elite, and the surrounding area is dotted with beautiful mansions. After this, we returned to the car to seek out a scenic hiking spot. While the others went along the scenic trail, I watched my daughter in the play area at the entrance of the national park. Later that evening, we visited a house listed on Airbnb in the area that featured a marvellous balcony from which we could enjoy the stunning sunset.
If you enjoy hiking, there are several scenic trails along the coast. You can also enjoy water sports such as kayaking, sailing, and fishing. This area is ideal for a variety of outdoor adventures.
Zapallar’s calm, laid-back vibe makes it a perfect place to unwind. Whether you’re strolling along the beach, reading a book in a cozy café, or simply enjoying the coastal breeze, relaxation is guaranteed.
The best time to visit Zapallar is during the summer months (December to March), when the weather is warm and the town is lively. However, if you prefer a quieter experience, the off-season (autumn and spring) is also lovely, with fewer tourists and pleasant temperatures.
